New director joins Seattle Maritime Academy

Following a nationwide search, Dale Bateman has been appointed as Associate Dean of Seattle Maritime Academy. A native of Salem, Oregon, Bateman most recently served as Assistant Director at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), a position he held for six years. This followed a 22-year career in the US Coast Guard, during which he attained the rank of Commander. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, and a master’s degree in ethics from Yale Divinity School.

“I look forward to building on the work of my predecessors to grow Seattle Maritime Academy,” Bateman said. “I see great opportunities for our students and for our school to be a catalyst for positive change in the maritime industry as we continue to provide high-quality education and maritime training to an increasingly diverse community. I am excited to see our graduates lead our industry through the 21st century.”

In his role as Associate Dean at Seattle Maritime Academy, Bateman is responsible for oversight and coordination of all maritime training programs and activities that support student recruitment, education, and retention in the college. He ensures that course curricula meet the academic standards established by both Seattle Central College and the US Coast Guard, and also support current - and future - workforce needs of the maritime industry.
