We offer the following training to recreational boaters as well as maritime professionals each quarter:

Basic Marine Electric Fundamentals for the Recreational Boater

Learn the fundamentals of electricity as it relates to recreational boats. We'll investigate:

  • Small boat wiring methods and practices
  • Troubleshooting and electrical fault prevention
  • Basic DC theory, series and parallel circuits and voltmeter operation
  • Best wiring practices 
  • Circuit breaker and fuse applications 
  • Battery selection, sizing and chargers
  • Circuit identification, schematics and troubleshooting

Basic Navigation and Safety

Recreational boating is fun, but as skipper, you're responsible for everyone's safety. Learn the basics of boating navigation using popular apps and paper charts. Learning the basics is easier than you think, and we'll direct you to training specific to your needs.

Please note: this class is for recreational sail and power boaters, both skipper and crewmembers, and requires some previous knowledge of navigation or boating.

Introduction to Marine Diesel Engines for the Recreational Boater

Learn more about marine diesel engines! We'll investigate the fundamentals of operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting small diesel propulsion engines for recreational boaters. During this class, you'll learn about:

  • Basic diesel and gasoline engine combustion theory
  • Lubrication and cooling systems
  • Alarm and controls
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting

You'll also receive a list of recommended books and reference materials to continue your learning outside of class.

Knots and Brews

Learn how to tie the knots essential to all recreational and power boaters while enjoying local Ballard beer! We'll teach you how to tie:

  • Bowline
  • Clove hitch 
  • Round turn and two half hitches
  • Stopper knots
  • Reef knot and more

You will also be able to recognize which knot to use in various situations. Must be 21+ to attend.

Whether captain or crew, there are essential knots and line handling skills that recreational sail and power boaters should know. Line handling skills are important for docking, undocking and transiting the locks.

During this class, you'll learn how to:

  • Handle lines safely 
  • Store lines
  • Communicate with the crew
  • Tie the basic knots that all recreational sail and power boaters should know

Learn the popular Navionics Mobile Boating Navigation App. We'll explore the basics of:

Master the required skills to make your next transit through the locks less stressful and more fun. Through step-by-step guidance and hands-on experience, we'll focus on preparation, safety, communication, and more. Please bring non-slip shoes and layered clothing appropriate to the forecasted weather.
