Dale Bateman
Dale Bateman assumed the role as Associate Dean of Seattle Maritime Academy in October, 2020. A native of Salem, Oregon, he began his maritime career in the Coast Guard, retiring at the rank of Commander. During his 22-year career, CDR Bateman served aboard a variety of ships, sailing throughout the world. Additionally, he taught both navigation and ethics at the US Coast Guard Academy.
Following his retirement, Dean Bateman served as the Assistant Director at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), overseeing all academic programs at both their Baltimore and Seattle campuses. During his six years at MITAGS, he led the creation of two additional apprenticeship programs, including the Washington State Ferries Mate Apprenticeship program.
Dean Bateman holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the US Coast Guard Academy and a master’s degree in ethics from Yale Divinity School.
When not at SMA, Dean Bateman bakes pies, coaches Sammamish High School volleyball, and runs with his family.
